About us
We’re Whitstable’s open access, not for profit, community samba band. Since forming in 2007 we’ve gone from strength to strength, performing at many varied venues across the district including the opening of Whitstable’s famous Oyster Festival & Canterbury Festival.
Samba Pelo Mar, translated from the Portuguese language of Brazil, means ‘Samba on the Sea/Seaside Samba’.
Based on a Samba style, our music is adapted and fused with world rhythms mostly composed by our Maestra Ann Day.
We’re an eclectic bunch of all ages, shapes, sizes and skills brought together to experience the thrill of playing uplifting and dynamic sounds in a large band.
We practice every Tuesday from 7-9pm at Whitstable Junior School. One off joining fee - £15 and subs - £15 pcm.
In 2009 a lottery grant from Awards4All allowed us to expand our diverse band whilst an additional award from Kent Grass Roots in 2010 has given us chance to further develop our technical skills.
We’re keen to embark on outreach projects throughout this year including free Samba sessions during Oyster Festival week.
Our sound is dynamic, shamanic and addictive. As you can see we’re colourful and enthusiastic – a welcome addition to any event – festivals, large parties, small gatherings, school transition workshops, fundraising, teaching and training opportunities, team building events and we’ve even performed at a funeral!!
We can provide general feelgood or teaching events for all ages and abilities, but if all you want to do is dance we defy you not to be drawn in by our sound.
If you’ve got an idea of how we can cater for your event please contact us for further discussion at: info[at]sambapelomar.co.uk
